Val High School’s Ecological Expedition in Kakamega Forest

For Val High School students, the adventure through Kakamega Forest was nothing short of magical. Guided by the knowledgeable ecologist Evans Malenya, they embarked on a journey through one of Kenya’s last remaining rainforests, discovering the lush beauty and rich biodiversity of this ancient forest.

As they wandered through the forest’s dense canopy, students encountered rare tree species and learned about the delicate ecological balance that sustains this vital natural resource. The guided tour offered them a deep dive into the forest’s unique flora and fauna, sparking their curiosity about the natural world.

The expedition also provided opportunities for wildlife observation, where students spotted playful monkeys and listened to the diverse songs of various bird species. Each moment was a chance for them to marvel at nature’s wonders and reflect on the importance of preserving these habitats.

One of the highlights of their journey was the climb to the top of Lirhanda Hill. Proudly standing atop a hill they conquered, with the breathtaking view of towering trees behind them, students symbolized their triumph in reaching the top. This moment was a testament to their perseverance and the rewards of their efforts.

Their adventure continued with a visit to the entrance of Lirhanda Hill Bat Cave in Kakamega County. This dormant volcano, reached through a short and steep ascent, is a former mine shaft home to several bats, adding an extra layer of intrigue to their exploration. The cave’s mysterious allure captivated the students, providing a thrilling conclusion to their forest expedition.

Through engaging discussions, students explored the significance of conservation and their role in protecting endangered species. This experience was more than a scenic tour; it was a call to action for environmental stewardship and a reminder of our collective responsibility to care for the natural world.
