What happens when aquaculture training moves beyond the classroom?
On 25th August 2026, Jumbo Fish Farm hosted a full-day aquaculture training organised by Echo Network Africa Foundation (ENAF) under the Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture (YISA) programme.
69 young women and men from Kisumu, Siaya, Busia and Kakamega came together for learning, practical demonstration and knowledge exchange.
Led by our Technical Manager, FREDRICK OUMA, the training covered:
• Feeding and nutrition
• Water quality management
• Culture systems
• Tilapia and catfish management
• Fish breeding
But the focus was not just on theory.
Participants went into the hatchery and grow-out sections, interacted with active production systems and experienced our Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) firsthand.
One highlight was a practical demonstration of artificial catfish propagation using pituitary extract — a technique many were seeing for the first time.
There is a big difference between knowing something can be done and actually seeing how it is done.
The exchange also went both ways. Participants brought their own experiences, challenges and lessons from the field, making the training a conversation between technical knowledge and practical reality.
For us, that is what effective capacity building should achieve:
Knowledge → Skills → Action → Impact
But training alone is not enough.
The real measure of success is what happens after the training.
Can new knowledge improve production?
Can better practices reduce losses?
Can new skills create opportunities?
And critically, do farmers have access to the resources and financing needed to put that knowledge into action?
Because the goal should not simply be to train more people.
It should be to enable more people to do more with what they learn.
That is how we turn capacity building into stronger farms, businesses, employment and livelihoods — and ultimately, a more sustainable aquaculture sector.
