Over the weekend, Jumbo Fish Farm (JFF) had the pleasure of hosting a homeschooling family for a unique and immersive learning experience. The visit was designed to provide the children with hands-on education in aquaculture while also allowing the family to relax and enjoy nature. This blend of education and leisure created an unforgettable experience that highlighted the importance of experiential learning.
The adventure began with a general farm tour, allowing the family to explore and understand the daily operations of different sections, including our state-of-the-art hatchery and the outgrow section, guided by our Technical and Hatchery Manager, Fredrick Ouma, learning firsthand how we breed and raise our quality tilapia and catfish .
They engaged in fish spotting and sporting, which involved catch and release activities, all while observing different fish species in their aquatic environment.
For these home-schooled kids, this was not just another trip, it was a live learning experience. They learned about the species reared at the farm, tilapia and catfish), breeding techniques with artificial propagation of catfish being an interesting part, feeding habits, and the significance of aquaculture in food production/security . Watching the fish swim gracefully in the water sparked curiosity and enthusiasm, leading to engaging discussions about aquatic life cycles, sustainable farming, and the role of fish in human nutrition.
To top it off, they got their hands dirty in post-harvest handling and fish preparation sessions, where they learned the art of descaling, gutting, cleaning, and filleting fish.
This practical exercise was both educational and empowering, allowing them to appreciate the effort that goes into preparing a meal from farm to table.

We believe in learning through experience but we also know that every great adventure needs moments of rest and reflection. The family had the opportunity to unwind in JFF serene environment, bonding over storytelling by the bonfire, sharing experiences and listening to fascinating tales centered around the local Luhyia community, their cultures, and the history of Jumbo Fish Farm. All this while in delicious, freshly prepared farm meals.
The visit was not only about acquiring knowledge but also about creating cherished memories as a family. They finalized their visit with a trip to the Nabongo Cultural Centre, where they explored the rich history and heritage of the region, adding a cultural dimension to their learning experience. The children played, explored, and engaged with nature, reinforcing the idea that learning can be enjoyable and interactive.
JFF is committed to providing educational experiences that go beyond textbooks, making learning a dynamic and engaging process. By integrating practical aquaculture lessons with relaxation, we offer families and learners a unique opportunity to connect with nature and gain valuable life skills.
