In a bid to enhance Siaya County aquaculture industry, members of the County Assembly Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Committee visited Jumbo Fish Farm in Kakamega on a study tour. The visit, which formed part of the committee due diligence exercise, aimed to assess the farm model approach and its capacity to sustain operations at the Lwanda K'otieno Fish Processing Plant, a facility run under a lease agreement between the County Government of Siaya and Jumbo Fish Farm sister company; Vemric Enterprises. Led by Chairperson Hon. Fredrick Omoro, MCA for East Ugenya Ward, the delegation engaged in a hands-on training session on modern aquaculture best practices, including fish hatchery technology, artificial catfish propagation, pond construction, and sustainable breeding methods. Jumbo Fish Farm, which operates under The Aquaculture Consortium (TAC), boasts 42 fish ponds and specializes in the production of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Mono-sex Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The committee interest in the farm stemmed from its ability to supply subsidized fingerlings, feeds, and equipment, ensuring a sustainable supply chain for aquaculture farmers. Speaking during the visit, Hon. Omoro emphasized the need for similar fish farming models in Siaya, noting their immense benefits in fostering economic empowerment and employment. "There is a need to train farmers in best practices, equipping them with skills that not only increase productivity but also improve market access," he stated. Additionally, Hon. Michael Otieno, MCA for South Uyoma Ward, highlighted the importance of partnerships between farmers and Vemric Enterprises, particularly in creating reliable market structures. "Through training programs, quality farming inputs, and sustainable aquaculture initiatives, our farmers can tap into local and international markets, including Italy, Dubai, and Saudi Arabia," he remarked. The committee appreciated the practical demonstrations and technical insights gained during the study tour, reaffirming their commitment to advancing aquaculture policies and investment in Siaya County. With the Lwanda K'otieno Fish Processing Plant poised for operationalization, this visit lays a strong foundation for strategic partnerships, improved production, and enhanced fish value-addition ensuring Siaya remains at the forefront of Kenya aquaculture industry.
