In January 2025, Jumbo Fish Farm (JFF) embarked on a 15-day feasibility visit to Norway and Sweden an eye-opening journey that laid the foundation for our now fully funded exchange programme with support from the Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (Norec).
Hosted by our partners Val Skoler AS and AquaFind AS, this trip allowed us to explore how advanced aquaculture systems in Europe could inform sustainable practices back home in Kenya. From cutting-edge Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and automated feeding technology to integrated aquaponics and traceability tools, every stop was a masterclass in innovation.
We also met with institutions like Sinkaberg Smolt, Salmax Group, and Salmar Feeds, gaining practical insight into fish health, value addition, and biosecurity. At Val Skoler, we participated in hands-on training in cage farming and circular food systems, models we aim to replicate in Kenya.
In Sweden, we finalized the application that would become the Kenya - Norway Resilient and Sustainable Aquaculture Exchange Programme, now fully approved and underway. We also connected with Sabuni and Partners, whose feedback helped shape our investment strategy for impact.
Back in Oslo, discussions with Daxap AS and a visit to NMBU helped us explore digitization, research collaboration, and farmer training platforms critical next steps as we build a Centre of Excellence for aquaculture in Kenya.
This trip proved that strategic partnerships, when backed by shared values and purpose, can truly drive transformation. We are grateful to Norec, Val Skoler, AquaFind, and every organization that hosted us. That journey sparked what is now a major step forward not just for JFF, but for Kenya Blue Economy.
