Led by our Technical Manager Fredrick Ouma, we took part in a significant aquaculture innovation deployment at Dunga Beach, Lake Victoria.

The activity marked the field deployment of Africa first AI-powered underwater early warning system, developed by ShoShin Innovation Hub and implemented in close collaboration with scientists from Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) OFFICIAL.

Over the past three years, fish cage farmers at Dunga Beach have experienced repeated losses due to sudden and unpredictable changes in water quality. The Shoshin-developed sensor system directly addresses this challenge by continuously monitoring underwater conditions, detecting pollution risks, and predicting harmful changes before they result in fish mortalities.

The system relays real-time data to KMFRI scientists for rapid assessment and response, while also providing advance alerts to farmers, enabling them to take timely action to protect their stock and livelihoods.

Participating in this deployment reflects our commitment to science-led aquaculture and practical innovation that responds to real challenges faced by farmers. We believe the future of aquaculture in Kenya will be shaped by data-driven tools that connect research, technology and on-farm decision-making.

This deployment represents an important step toward integrated lake monitoring, with a long-term vision of combining below-water sensing, surface monitoring and satellite data to safeguard aquaculture ecosystems across the country.
