On 15th April, Jumbo Fish Farm hosted students from Val Skoler AS for a hands-on skills exchange, and we focused on one of the most critical areas in aquaculture, the hatchery.

This was not a tour or a presentation. It was a full system reset.

In a RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System), the biggest risks are often invisible. Sludge buildup, uneaten feed, and biofilm formation in pipes quietly affect water quality and fish health over time.

So we got to work.

We drained the system completely, removed all accumulated waste, and carried out a deep clean across tanks, pipes, pumps, filters, and biofilter media. Every surface was handled with intention because in hatchery operations, detail matters.

Disinfection followed, restoring a safe and bio-secure environment.

At the same time, strict biosecurity protocols were enforced. Controlled access to the hatchery, use of clean protective gear, and disciplined handling procedures ensured that contamination risks were minimized. Biosecurity is not just a process, it is a culture.

We then moved to conditioning. Hydrogen peroxide was circulated through the system for several hours to eliminate any remaining threats. The system was then drained and thoroughly rinsed to ensure complete safety.

Finally, we refilled with clean water and allowed the system to stabilize, preparing it for the next production cycle.

It is not the easiest process, but it is one of the most important.

In aquaculture, success does not begin when you stock fish. It begins with the system you trust to raise them.

This is the kind of practical, real-world learning that defines meaningful skills exchange.
