Our recent Norec monitoring visit to Jumbo Fish Farm marked an important moment of reflection for our exchange programme,  a chance to step back, assess progress and have open, practical conversations about where we are and where we are going.

We were pleased to host Marit Erdal and Richard Omondi Mbuya who spent time engaging with both the team and participants, walking through operations on the farm and reviewing how the project is being implemented on the ground.

What stood out most during the visit was the depth of practical exchange. This programme has never been about theory alone, it is about application. Over the past months, participants have been directly involved in technical work, system improvements, documentation and day-to-day farm operations. From strengthening water and power systems to developing operational manuals and supporting structured training, the exchange is translating into tangible changes within the farm.

The discussions also revisited the project’s results framework; not just as a reporting requirement, but as a working tool. Conversations focused on how activities align with intended outcomes: building technical competence, strengthening institutional collaboration and contributing to a more structured and capable aquaculture sector.

Beyond the farm itself, the visit highlighted the growing network around the project. Engagement with stakeholders such as Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) OFFICIAL represented by Kevin Obiero, PhD reflects a broader shift towards collaboration between the private sector, research institutions and government, something that remains critical for long-term sector growth.

The exchange continues to demonstrate that knowledge transfer works best when it is embedded in real work environments. It is in these shared spaces and through daily problem-solving that skills are built, systems are improved and partnerships are strengthened.

We appreciate the time and insights shared during the visit and look forward to building on this momentum as the programme continues.
